What to Expect with the iPad 3

While demos and free trials give us a taste of games and software prior to their release, mockups for the future iPad can now be found online. Everybody seems to know what’s in store for the new line of slates, even if Apple and Mr. Jobs keep silent about it. Rumors claim that the new slate might be introduced as the iPad 2 Plus or the iPad 2 HD. The major change, by the way, is a high resolution retina display. Fancy names, but these are thought to be enough to keep the eager wait for the iPad 3. Expected time of arrival for these pads is sometime between April and March of 2012, while other reports are saying as soon as November 2011!

Speaking of the mockups, a so-called prototype designed by Guilherme Schasiepen displays an even slimmer iPad than the current model. While the iPad 2 is 0.34 inches, the iPad 3 is expected to be at just a mere 0.29 inches! You can literally use the iPad 3 as a bookmark, though I doubt anyone would dare try it.

Also, the back of the slate would now be made up of glass instead of metal. But it may just well be glass-coated. The curved design is maintained, making sure that the feel of the iPad3 offers some feeling of familiarity to its loyal users. In other words, it looks and feels exactly the same.

A 5 mega-pixel camera on the back is a sweet treat. In front, there’s a Web cam that can be used with FaceTime. There are also new antennas for WiFi. As always, 3G/4G capabilities are supported, and can neatly be located near the speakers.

The future iPad 3′s resolution is expected to be 2 times bigger than the current 1024×768 display. The aspect ratio is maintained at 4:3, held back largely because of the look and layout of iOS. Of course, it would be stupid to assume that the future iPad would not have superior video capabilities. Everyone expects better resolution. There is no sense buying the same iPad with a different name.

Mockups are just mockups. Consumers expect Apple to come with a device that is slimmer and showcases improved hardware. Hopefully, Apple will break silence before the summer ends on an official iPad 3 release date.

NBC host: Sept iPhone 5 release date follows up with October iPhone 6

The iPhone 5 wil be outdated a month after its release date in September, by Apple’s own hand, because the iPhone 6 will supplant it in October according to one NBC host who should probably be paying closer attention. The joke came last night from Jay Leno, who has been prone to making iPhone 5 related jokes of late, and plays off the parody of a few years ago from network-mate SNL who had Steve Jobs introducing a new and progressively smaller iPod model every two minutes. The jab from Leno, aimed at making fun of Apple for frequently releasing new versions of its products which make the existing version obsolete, comes at an odd time: for the first time since the iPhone debuted in 2007, the current iPhone 4 has been on the market for more than a twelve month span. Leno’s joke of course was harmless even if it was poorly researched. But it adds a bit of insult to injury for those who’ve been waiting patiently for the iPhone 5 (here’s more about its release date). Three groups of people each have different reasons for wanting the iPhone 5 yesterday, even as they’ve sailed through more tomorrows waiting for it than they would have expected.

Professional YouTube to iPhone Downloader to download/convert YouTube video to iPhone easily and quickly.

Besides download YouTube to iPhone, this powerful program also enables users to download streaming YouTube videos/audio from to iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod, iPad, iPad 2 with perfect video-audio synchronization, even the lastest iOS5.0 supported.

One group is the current iPhone 4 user base. Not all of them will upgrade to the iPhone 5, as the release of the free iOS 5 operating system will run plenty smoothly on the existing iPhone whether it’s the AT&T or the Verizon model. But some users will want the latest just because it’s the latest, while others will upgrade to the iPhone 5 because unlike the 4, it’ll have a dual core A5 processor which will make the entire iPhone experience faster. Except for network speeds, of course, but they may also see a boost in certain cities if Apple indeed adds 4G LTE to the iPhone 5 as the two aforementioned carriers are hoping. But this group of alpha personalities is more impatient by nature, if anything. It’s the other two groups of would-be iPhone 5 buyers who are sweating real bullets over its continued delay…

Group number two consists of those who have a non-iPhone they don’t want, and have already decided that the iPhone 5 will be their jumping-in point for the iPhone. This includes Android users with their exceedingly high dissatisfaction rates, as recent studies have shown that 42% of Android users say they’re moving to the iPhone 5 when it launches. For users to be so unhappy with their current product that they’ve already decided to move to a competing product which hasn’t even yet been announced, these users must be exceedingly unhappy with their current situation. That leaves them on pins and needles waiting for Apple to release the iPhone 5. Despite Leno’s joking assertions, the iPhone 5 should most likely surface in September. And the iPhone 6 won’t be released for perhaps another year after that (although Apple could revert to the previous schedule with a summer 2012 launch), so there’s no worry of being immediately obsoleted. But that’s of little current consolation to those who are either gutting it out on an Android or BlackBerry phone they no longer want to be on, or who are still toting a simple flip-phone. Plenty of would-be iPhone users decided from the start that they wouldn’t buy a smartphone until the iPhone 5 came to their carrier, and now that the iPhone 5 is debuting on Verizon at the same time as AT&T, they’re finally ready to jump in. But for some of them, that old flip-phone has duct tape holding the battery in by now, so their clock is ticking as well.

Finally, there’s that group of current iPhone users who aren’t using the current iPhone. They’re on a 3GS (released in 2009) or a 3G (released in 2008) for one of a variety of reasons. They couldn’t afford the iPhone 4 when it was launched last year. They were scared off by the litany of iPhone 4 faux-controversies. The iPhone 4 features didn’t do anything for them. Or they simply don’t feel the need to move to a new iPhone model every time one is launched. But by now their 3GS or (particularly) their 3G is old and outdated, doesn’t run the highest-horsepower new apps properly, doesn’t run iOS 4 at full bore, is beat up or worn down, or is otherwise ready for retirement. These folks were gambling that they’d see the iPhone 5 in June or July, and are now counting the seconds in the hopes that they can gut it out to the iPhone 5 release date without having to settle for buying a last-minute iPhone 4 instead.

So who’s happy about the delay of the iPhone 5? Its competitors, for one thing. Motorola gets to launch its Android-based Droid X2 and Droid Bionic phones on Verizon before the iPhone 5 arrives. Microsoft might get to push Windows Phone 7 Mango (or whatever it’s called now) out the door before the iPhone 5 launch. And those who bought the Verizon iPhone 4 back in March when it launched might perversely be feeling good about their iPhone model remaining current just a little longer so they won’t feel outdated. Then of course there’s Jay Leno, who gets to keep making iPhone 5 jokes on NBC until its release date finally arrives. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

Sony: 3D costs as low as 'half a percent' of overhead

Sony is easily one of the most vocal supporters of 3D content in the marketplace. Many of its upcoming first-party titles, including Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3, support stereoscopic 3D. However, with excitement for 3D movies waning, and adoption of 3D televisions still low, many have openly wondered: "is it worth it?"

Simon Benson, SCEE's senior development manager and 3D evangelist, obviously thinks so. He argues that the low amount of effort it takes to implement the technology makes it an easy choice. "It's not a significant overhead for us. It’s not like we have to justify being able to sell millions millions more games because of it, it’s just another feature of the game."

Speaking to GI.biz, Benson says that the cost of 3D on overall performance is rather low, especially if the game supports a split-screen mode:

What we’re talking about here is, in some cases we’ve had titles where 3D has been half a per cent of overhead. It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it. Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and reauthor it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it’s the case of it doesn’t even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn’t, it can just be done.

But isn't Benson concerned about the low adoption rates of 3DTVs? His inability to offer concrete sales figures of Sony's own 3DTVs should be some indication that 3D has, simply put, not caught on. That's no worry to Benson, who points to the future. "I think what probably going to happen over time is it’ll be the case like now, if you try and go out and buy an standard definition TV you probably just wouldn’t be able to."

Sony plans on releasing a PlayStation-branded 3DTV, a first for the company, later this year.

iPad 3 Release Date Before Thanksgiving?

The iPad 3 may have a release date prior to US Thanksgiving

The China Times is claiming that Apple is set to release the iPad 3 by Thanksgiving. This of course could also be the release of the newly rumored iPad 2 HD or iPad 2 Plus. Rumors of a fall release date for the iPad 3 have been reported since the release of the iPad 2. The iPad 2 of course was released in March of this year, and was short of many expectations. China Times has released information that the supplies have been ordered for the first production run of both the iPhone 5 and the Apple iPad 3.

Rumors have the iPhone 5 being released in September and then the iPad 3 right around Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday and the unofficial starting day of the holiday shopping season, is rumored to be a possible release date for the iPad 3. The iPhone 5 is rumored to have several major changes in the design. This of course is unconfirmed by Apple at this time. The iPad 3 is of course rumored to have a new high definition display, and possibly a Retina Display. Other improvements could include a faster processor and a much needed improved camera.

What about the iPad 2 HD?

The iPad 2 HD has also been rumored to be the next tablet from iPad, putting the iPad 3 on hold until 2012. At this point the China Times doesn’t reference which of the models are going to be released. If the iPad 2 HD is going to be the next release you can expect to see fewer improvements then with a release of an entirely new model. The iPad 2 HD, if real, is expected to be an upgrade to the display. However the rest of the design is to remain the same or very similar to the current iPad 2. This is similar to what Apple has done with phone releases in recent history.

The newest models could in fact be announced much sooner then this dates. If the release date for the iPad 3 is in fact Black Friday then the announcement could come much earlier. A possible roll out for the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 could occur at the same time with the release of the iOS 5. This of course has been mentioned as a possibility it now seems like it may occur.

Skype for iPad app hits Apple's App Store

Skype's iPad app finally arrived in Apple's App Store on Tuesday, after a bit of a technical stumble on Monday night.

The Microsoft-owned video calling service's Skype for iPad app mistakenly hit the App Store on Monday, and after a few iOS users were able to get in a download, the app was pulled down at Skype's request.

"To ensure your best Skype experience, we've temporarily removed Skype for iPad which went live prematurely today," the company tweeted Monday night.

Outside of being able to take advantage of the iPad's 9.7-inch screen, the Skype for iPad app isn't offering a lot of new features from the previously-released Skype app designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch. But that one point may be enough justification for a download for Skype users who have one of the Apple tablets.

As with all Skype apps -- on phone, tablet, laptop or desktop -- both voice and video calls can be made, as well as instant messages and text messages.

Skype, which Microsoft bought in May for $8.5 billion, has more than 170 million customers a month.

Apple Posts iWork Web Developer Job Opening in Prep for iOS 4 and iCloud

It seems that the launch of iOS 5 and iCloud is soon approaching indeed as Apple has posted a job listing looking for a new engineer in the area of iWork specifically. This person would “build the front and/or back end of scalable web applications,”noting that this will more than likely be an expansion to Apple’s already existing iWorl.com as well as future iCloud business expansions, all this as the applications continue to be improved for the native Mac OS X Lion as well as mobile versions.

This job posting furthermore asks for someone who has strong programming skills as well as “commitment to delivering [a] great user experience.” This candidate, says the Apple job posting, “will be part of the core engineering team responsible for the design and development of the software system.” While existing MobileMe apps translate desktop apps into web-based equivalents at the moment, these being anything from Mail to Address Book, this does not necessarily mean there will be web-based versions of document editing software similar to Google Docs or the lovely Microsoft Office 365.

At the moment, iWork.com has been restricted to making Pages, Keynote, and Numbers created documents available for alternate user viewing and collaborative comment. What Apple appears to be doing here is keeping apps on the desktop and in the mobile world (on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad,) rather than bringing them entirely up to the web. In this way and because of this, iWork’s Pages, Numbers, and Keynote have been inside the top 10 grossing apps in the market since their inception.

Furthermore, iCloud seems to continue to be the center of attention here, providing iWork apps on the Mac, iPad, and iPhone with the ability to save to the cloud and open in other locations in the future. The abilities of iCloud don’t stop there, allowing also large documents to be shared to others without restricting one’s work to gigantic email attachments – all of this done in similar web sharing ways to the already active iWork.com.

The site iWork.com has not had a new version since the launch of the apps in iWork 2009 save for a minor update recently to add support for full-screen, Versions, auto save, and Resume as present in Mac OS X Lion. The job listing here points toward a rather lovely iCloud future for the apps. BONUS: a developer 1.5 version of iWork apps has been revealed in the soon to be released iOS 5 – updates galore!

iPad competitors still can't match Apple's design efficiencies

As hardware makers struggle to compete with the iPad in terms of sales, they also can't match Apple's design efficiency, which helps to keep the iPad's costs down, one analysis has found.

IHS iSuppli this week revealed the results of its teardown analysis of eight different tablet models. They found that Apple's control of the iOS operating system allows it to reduce costs by limiting memory quantity and utilizing thinner batteries.

The iPad 2, for example, features just 512 megabytes of SDRAM, which is half the 1 gigabyte found in most competing tablets. That memory density reduction affords Apple a nearly $14 reduction in the build of materials for the iPad 2 compared to other tablets.

By controlling iOS, Apple can ensure that its proprietary mobile operating system features efficient memory usage, and allows the company to build a device with less RAM.

"Since Apple controls both the operating system and hardware design of the iPad, it is able to attain design efficiencies that other tablet manufacturers cannot," said Wayne Lam, senior analyst of competitive analysis at IHS. "These efficiencies become obvious in areas like the memory and the battery, where Apple maintains advantages in cost, space savings and performance compared with every competitor in the business."

Included in the comparison were three iPad models from Apple: both the first-generation Wi-Fi-only and 3G models, as well as the 3G-capable iPad 2. Also tested were the 7-inch-class Samsung Galaxy Tab and RIM BlackBerry PlayBook; while around the 10-inch screen size were the Motorola Xoom, Asus Eee Pad, and HP TouchPad.

Most tablets that compete with the iPad come from blueprints and reference designs outsourced to third parties. But Apple maintains tight control of the design of its devices, as well as components and contract manufacturers.

"Apple takes a vertically integrated approach to its products, from the operating system to the user interface, to the hardware design, down to the selection of individual parts used in the device," Lam said. "For example, Apple even uses its own applications processor design in both the iPad and iPad 2.

iSuppli

mo
"In contrast, Android tablet makers buy those capabilities from the likes of Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. This gives Apple greater control in multiple areas of product development."

The analysis noted that Apple has sent all of the trends in the tablet market, forcing manufacturers to gravitate toward the $500 "sweet spot" for pricing. And while early competitors embraced the 7-inch form factor, a decision which Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs derided, they have since moved toward the same size range as the 9.7-inch screen on the iPad.
